Is It Worth Fixing My Car After an Accident?

When you’ve been involved in a vehicle accident, you may decide whether to have your vehicle repaired without filing a claim against your insurance company, standing the expense on your own. That may be your better option. Unless the repairs are extensive, you may choose this option.  First, you must ask yourself this question: Is it worth fixing my car after an accident?

Filing a claim against your insurance company means a possible rise in your insurance rate. Therefore, unless the repairs are going to cost a good deal, you may prefer this option.

Another choice is, should you make any repairs at all?

You must first consider the age and condition of your vehicle. Since the time of purchase, whether the car was new or used, it will nevertheless have depreciated in value. If it is an older vehicle, its value will also be decreased accordingly. You may choose simply to sell your damaged car as-is. Before you do this, however, you’ll have to determine the car’s present value.

Your first step will be to decide exactly what to do after you’ve been involved in a one-car accident. You must be mindful of the fact that if you to choose to have your vehicle repaired after an accident, it must pass a safety inspection. In some areas, this may be once a year.

That translates to presenting a vehicle that is in proper condition: no hanging or missing parts. If the damage to your vehicle after an accident isn’t too noticeable, you may choose to do a bare minimum of repair to make the vehicle roadworthy. If the necessary repairs are minimal, perhaps light suspension work or replacing a headlight or bumper, this may be feasible. For example, a used bumper may be found to replace a damaged bumper.

It’s important to remember, however, that even minor repairs may be run to a few hundred pounds. Even a headlight assembly may appear to be minor, but it too will probably be pricier than you expected. If you choose that option, you may be able to continue to use your vehicle despite its loss in value. And it must also be understood that an improperly repaired vehicle may not give you the reliable service you need and expect.

The other option before you is to make a claim against your insurance company.

In any event, you should never admit to any fault at the scene. If another vehicle is involved or if property is damaged and the property owner is available, you should exchange information necessary as well as take statements from witnesses, if any.

If the other party refuses to give any information, the registration may be helpful to the insurance company to locate him/her. You should inform your insurance company straight away even if you do not choose to file a claim.
